Let's be honest up front: for one or two people, a whole private jet is much more expensive than first class. But "private" isn't only one product anymore. Between whole-jet charter, empty legs and shared seats, there are cases where flying private costs about the same as a premium airline trip and saves hours.
The four ways to fly
- First class on an airline: a big seat, but the same airport, security lines and schedule as everyone else.
- Shared (semi-private) seats: you buy one seat on a small jet that leaves from a private terminal. JSX is the best-known: 30-seat jets, check-in about 20 minutes before departure, bags, snacks and Wi-Fi included.
- Whole-jet charter: the aircraft is yours, on your schedule, from the airport you choose.
- Empty legs: the whole jet, but one way, on the operator's schedule, at a big discount.
The math: New York → Miami for a group
Here's a one-way trip for a group, using published 2025–2026 price ranges:
| Option | Total for the group | Per person |
|---|---|---|
| First class, sale fare (~$325 each, Aug 2025 example) | ~$2,000–2,600 | ~$325 |
| JSX shared seat (from ~$615 each) | ~$3,700–4,900 | from ~$615 |
| Light jet, whole aircraft ($15,000–28,000), 6 people | $15,000–28,000 | ~$2,500–4,700 |
| Super-midsize ($20,000–35,000), 8 people | $20,000–35,000 | ~$2,500–4,400 |
| Empty leg on a light jet (illustrative, ~50–65% off) | ~$6,000–12,000 | ~$1,000–2,000 |
First-class fares jump a lot at holidays and last minute, so the real gap is often smaller than the sale-fare row suggests. Taxes and fees vary too.
Count the hours, not just the dollars
The flight time is similar. Everything around it isn't:
- Airline: arrive 1.5–2 hours early, security line, gate, boarding, then baggage claim at the other end.
- Private: arrive 15–30 minutes before departure, walk to the plane, and your bags come off with you.
On a New York–Florida trip, that's often 2–3 hours saved per person, each way. Private terminals like Teterboro or Fort Lauderdale Executive are also usually closer to where people actually live and stay than the big airline airports.
When private makes sense
1. You're a group of 5 or more. The per-person price of a whole jet drops fast with every seat you fill.
2. You're flexible enough for an empty leg. At 50%+ off, a full empty leg can cost less per person than holiday first class. How empty legs work.
3. Time is the real cost. Business trips with several stops in one day, a direct flight to a small airport near your destination, or traveling with kids, elderly parents or pets.
And when it doesn't: one person on a route with good first-class service, booked well in advance, and nobody minding the airport.
A middle path: shared seats
If you're one or two travelers who want the private-terminal experience, a shared seat is the closest thing to first-class pricing. JSX, for example, flies between Teterboro and South Florida (Fort Lauderdale Executive, Opa-locka, Palm Beach) with fares from about $615, and has run sales from about $499 on South Florida–Westchester flights. Some of its New York–Florida flights are open only to members of its club, so check before you plan around them.
Questions & answers
Is flying private cheaper than first class?
Per person, almost never for one or two travelers. For groups of five or more, with an empty-leg discount, or at peak holiday first-class prices, the difference can be small.
How much time does flying private save?
Usually 2–3 hours per person on a domestic trip, mostly by skipping airport check-in, security and baggage claim, and by using airports closer to your destination.
What is a semi-private or shared jet?
You buy a single seat on a small jet that departs from a private terminal on a set schedule, like JSX. It's cheaper than chartering the whole aircraft.
How many people fit on a light jet?
Usually five to seven, though luggage and range set the real limit. A light jet suits up to about six people with one soft bag each; with more luggage, a midsize or super-midsize is more comfortable.
