An empty leg is a private jet flight that would otherwise fly with no passengers on board, sold to travelers at a discount. It's also called an empty-leg flight, a one-way deal or a deadhead (the industry word for flying empty).
Why empty legs exist
Private jets often fly one way for a client and then need to get home, or to their next pickup. That repositioning flight happens anyway, with the crew and aircraft already paid for by the first trip. Selling it, even cheaply, is better for the operator than flying empty.
Example: a jet based in Fort Lauderdale flies a family to New York on Friday. On Saturday it flies back to Fort Lauderdale with nobody on board, unless it's sold as an empty leg.
Empty leg at a glance
| What you get | The whole private jet, not a seat |
| Direction | One way |
| Price | Typically about 30–75% below a normal charter |
| Schedule | Set by the operator; small flexibility at best |
| Main risk | It can move or be cancelled if the original client changes plans |
| Best for | Flexible travelers, groups of 4–8, one-way trips |
How much it costs
Because you're filling a flight that would otherwise earn nothing, the price drops a lot: typically about 30–75% off the regular one-way charter price, depending on the route, aircraft and how close to departure it is. You pay for the whole aircraft, so the more seats you fill, the better the per-person price.
Empty leg vs other ways to fly private
- Private charter: your route, your time, full price. What is a private charter?
- Shared seat: you buy one seat on a scheduled small jet. What is jet sharing?
- Empty leg: the whole jet at a discount, but on the jet's schedule.

Questions & answers
What does "empty leg" mean?
It's a flight segment ("leg") a private jet flies without passengers, usually to return home or reach its next client. Operators sell it at a discount.
Is an empty leg the whole plane?
Yes. You book the entire aircraft, so you can fill every seat with your own group.
Are empty legs round trip?
No, they're one way. For the return you can look for another empty leg, a shared seat or a regular charter.
Can an empty leg be cancelled?
Yes, if the original paying client changes or cancels. Check the terms before you book and keep a backup plan for important trips.
