Leather seats in a private jet cabin

Jet sharing means buying a single seat on a private jet instead of renting the whole aircraft. You share the cabin with other travelers, but you still use a private terminal, skip the big-airport crowds and fly on a small jet. It's also called a shared flight, semi-private flight or by-the-seat private flying.

How it works

Most shared flights in the US are public charters. A company arranges a whole aircraft from a certified operator, then sells the seats one by one under rules set by the US Department of Transportation. Flights run on a published schedule, often between popular city pairs, and leave from private terminals. Well-known examples are JSX, which flies 30-seat jets, and Aero.

Jet sharing at a glance

What you get One seat (or a few) on a small jet
Schedule Set in advance by the company
Terminal Private, with a short check-in
Price Per seat; on some routes from a few hundred dollars
Best for Solo travelers and couples who want a private-terminal experience

What it costs

You pay per seat, so it's by far the cheapest way to fly private. For example, JSX launched Teterboro–South Florida flights with fares from about $615 one way, and has run sales from around $499 on other routes. Bags, snacks and Wi-Fi are often included.

How it's different from charter

  • Charter: the whole jet, your route and time; you pay for the aircraft. What is a private charter?
  • Shared: one seat, the company's schedule; you pay per seat.
  • Screening: some public-charter services screen passengers and limit liquids like an airline (Aero adopted this in 2025), so check before you pack.
