What is a discovery flight?

A discovery flight is an introductory lesson where you take the controls of a small training aircraft with a certified flight instructor beside you. No experience is needed, and it is one of the most memorable gifts there is.

What happens on the day

You meet your certified flight instructor (CFI), who walks you around the aircraft for the pre-flight check and explains the controls. Then you climb into the left seat, the pilot’s seat.

The instructor handles the take-off and stays in command the whole time, but once you’re in the air you fly the plane: turns, climbs and descents, with a view few people ever get. Flights usually last 30–60 minutes, often over the coast or the city.

Many people use a discovery flight to see whether they’d like to become pilots. Time flown with a CFI can be logged in a pilot logbook.
