What is jet sharing?

Jet sharing, or a shared flight, lets you buy a single seat on a private jet instead of chartering the whole aircraft. You get the private terminal and the comfort of a jet, and split the cost with a few other travellers.

How shared flights work

Shared flights run on popular routes and dates, for example Miami to New York. Each seat is sold separately, so you pay only for your own seat, often from about $3,000 on that route.

You check in at a private terminal, skip the airport crowds and board a few minutes before departure, just like a private charter. In the US, per-seat private flights are sold under the Department of Transportation’s public charter rules or by scheduled operators, with the operator named before you pay.

Questions & answers

How much does a seat on a shared private jet cost?

It depends on the route. Miami to New York, for example, is often around $3,000 per seat, compared with $25,000 or more to charter the whole jet.

Who else is on the flight?

Other private travellers who booked seats on the same flight. Cabins are small, usually a handful of passengers.

What happens if the flight doesn’t fill up?

If the minimum number of seats isn’t sold, the flight may be rescheduled or cancelled and you are refunded or offered another date.

Can I bring luggage?

Yes, within the aircraft’s limits, usually one suitcase and a personal item per seat. Larger items should be requested in advance.

Is jet sharing the same as an empty leg?

No. With jet sharing you buy one seat on a scheduled flight. With an empty leg you book the whole aircraft on a one-way repositioning flight.
